How do I get to Celestun from Merida?
You can drive, take a bus, or book a guided tour. Driving west on Federal Highway 281 takes 1 hour and 30 minutes. Alternatively, second-class buses depart from Mérida's Terminal Noreste and take about 2.5 hours. See our Take the bus guide for details.
How much does the Celestun flamingo tour cost?
There is a protected area fee of approximately 120 MXN per person. Hiring a private boat at the Parador Turístico costs 3,026 MXN for the entire vessel. The boats hold up to 6 passengers, allowing groups to split the cost.
Can you visit Celestun without a tour?
Yes. You can drive or take a public bus to the town. Once you arrive at the Parador Turístico by the bridge, you can easily hire a local lancha directly. You do not need an organized tour from Mérida to enter.
How long is the boat ride in Celestun?
The standard boat tour lasts approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes to 2 hours. This gives you enough time to see the open lagoon, navigate the mangrove tunnels, and stop at the freshwater springs.
What is the difference between Celestun and Rio Lagartos for flamingos?
Celestún is best visited in the winter (November to March) and is located west of Mérida. Rio Lagartos is located to the east and is typically better for flamingo viewing during the spring and summer months. Read our Celestun vs Rio Lagartos comparison.
Are there crocodiles in the Celestun Biosphere Reserve?
Yes, crocodiles live in the reserve. You might spot them resting on the muddy banks while you navigate the mangrove tunnels. Your guide will keep a safe distance. Visitors must stay inside the boat unless at a designated swimming area.
Can you swim in the Celestun reserve?
Yes, you can swim in designated freshwater springs called "ojos de agua." These clear springs are located inside the mangroves. Tours typically stop here so visitors can cool off. Wear your swimsuit underneath your clothes.
Why are the flamingos in Celestun pink?
The flamingos get their color from their diet. The estuary's mix of fresh and saltwater supports Artemia salina crustaceans. These small organisms are rich in carotenoids, which turn the flamingos' feathers pink.
Where do the boat tours in Celestun leave from?
Boats depart from two main locations. The official Parador Turístico near the bridge offers calm waters and a standard route. You can also hire boats directly from Celestún beach, which covers a longer, sometimes choppier route along the coast.
Is it better to take a boat from the bridge or the beach in Celestun?
Bridge departures from the Parador Turístico are smoother and slightly shorter, making them ideal for families. Beach departures take longer and include a ride on the open ocean, which can be choppy. Prices are generally similar.
